You know the saying about the cobbler’s kids having no shoes? The photographer’s kids sometimes get the shaft. It does not happen often these days, but sometimes I actually photograph my own kids.
When they were little I photographed them all the time. It does not happen often nowadays because they are older and are very busy. Two of them are gone most of the year. But yesterday was perfect because we had a snowstorm. I had to reschedule my clients because it was too awful for them to be out driving to portrait sessions with kids. We all were sort of captive in the house. Too bad only two of my three were willing to participate, but it was fun all the same. So here are some things we did yesterday:

We started out indoors. I liked that the color of the sweater perfectly matched the flowers on the rug. Serendipity. Her eyes match as well.

I liked the black and white magazine images in the background. I used off camera lighting in a butterfly pattern to give it a more fashion/editorial feel. Black and White seemed like it fit the feel of the image best.

The position of the light accentuates the line of her jaw. Very film noir.

We went outside in the snow for a few. We used off camera lighting.

Love the falling snow.

Nice to show off the Christmas present coat.

Directional lighting is more interesting than flat lighting.
Now all I need to do is convince my middle kid to let me take some pictures of her.
